Rick Chapman was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and lived there until he was 15. He later returned to teach English in the capital city of Kinshasa for three years. Rick joined ALP 20 years ago and currently teaches Fundamental Grammar and Composition, Intermediate Grammar and GMAT preparation. What does he enjoy most about ALP? "The friendly and enthusiastic students!"

Rick, who coordinates observation of ALP classes by students from the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program at CSUF, has a BA in History and an MS in TESOL.

Esther Lee-Chong was born in Korea and came to the U.S. when she was six. Esther taught English in Korea after graduating from college with a BA in Intercultural Studies. "Although I am Korean-American, I experienced culture shock with food, language, social relations and classroom dynamics when I first returned to Korea," she explains. "It was not easy, but it was a great learning experience for me." Her experiences in Korea are helpful in assisting ALP students with the challenges of adjusting to a new culture.

Esther has an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and joined ALP three years ago. She teaches Advanced Reading, Intermediate Composition, Intermediate Vocabulary and Business Writing. She also speaks Korean.

Sean Cochran lived in China for a year while doing research for his MA in Linguistics from CSUF. Sean, who speaks Mandarin Chinese and Vietnamese, joined ALP 8 years ago. Currently, he is teaching Proficient Composition, Advanced Oral Language, Advanced Grammar, and Developmental Vocabulary. He is also the coordinator for ALP conversation partners.

"I enjoy teaching students who have big dreams and are ready to work hard to reach them," Sean says. "I enjoy the energy and perspective that ALP students bring into the classroom.

Bill Fowler joined ALP more than 20 years ago. He teaches Oral Language, Grammar and Composition. He also coordinates hiring of part-time faculty, schedules teachers, and places students into their various levels. "I have always been fascinated by languages and have studied a number of them," Bill says. "I speak some Spanish and Chinese." He has a BA in Linguistics and an MS in Education, with an emphasis in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

"I have traveled to western Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Japan, China, Mexico and Canada," he says. "I would like to travel more in the future to see more of my students' countries."

Danielle Majam-Finch has taught ESL courses for 14 years. She joined ALP in 2009 and currently teaches Grammar-Developmental Level, Reading-Collegiate Level, Composition-Advanced Level and Oral Language-Proficient Level. She has a B.S. in Child Development and a Master's in English with a TESOL option. "I love the opportunity to learn about my students' cultures, traditions and languages," she says.

Danielle speaks a bit of Japanese, having lived in Shizuoka, Japan for two years. She also speaks some Tagalog.

John Marshall, who has taught English for more than 30 years, has knowledge of Greek, Spanish, German, Arabic, and some French. John began his career as a volunteer English teacher in Kenya and went on to teach in Zambia and Oman, as well as London, where he worked with Indian and Pakistani immigrants. He also worked in British Consulates in Caracas, Venezuela and Nairobi, Kenya.

John joined ALP in 2008 and teaches IELTS Preparation, Study Skills, Fundamental Grammar and World Seminar. He also developed and taught a course titled Wall Street Stocks and Bonds and assists ALP students working in the CSUF language laboratory.

After earning a BA in History and a Diploma in Teaching English Overseas from Manchester University, UK, John went on to attain an MA in African Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. He also has an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from the Institute of Education, London.

Catherine Moore who has been with ALP since 2008, teaches Intermediate Pronunciation, American Pronunciation and Public Speaking. She has traveled to more than 30 countries around the world and has earned three degrees—an A.A. in Liberal Studies, a BA in Speech and Hearing Sciences, as well as an MA in Communicative Disorders. She is also a licensed Speech Pathologist with Certification in Clinical Competence. She has had the opportunity to complete special assignments with faculty and students from universities all over the world, and recently was a presenter in Cambodia as a People to People Ambassador. She is a member of TESOL – Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and CATESOL.

Nancy Motz has been with ALP for more than 20 years and has taught almost all of the courses offered at all levels. Currently, her focus is on developmental reading, composition, and grammar and Intermediate vocabulary. She has a BA in English/Education from the University of Washington, Seattle, and a TESOL certificate from the University of California, Irvine. Nancy also earned an MA in English Literature from Cal State Fullerton.

She lived in Saudi Arabia for more than six years while teaching English to employees of Aramco, the national oil company of Saudi Arabia, the largest oil corporation in the world.

Bruce Rubin teaches upper-level courses in Composition, Reading, Critical Thinking and a new class – Seminar in Human Behavior. Bruce, who joined ALP in 2001, holds a BA in English Literature, a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate and an MA in Humanities.

Femia Scarfone joined ALP in summer 2011 to teach in the summer program for Brazilian high school students. Currently, she teaches grammar, composition, reading and oral language for ALP.

"I admire my students' eagerness to learn, their positive attitude toward a new culture and their courage for wanting to study in a foreign country," Femia says. "I enjoy serving as their teacher, coach and mentor. And I strive daily to help them succeed in their academic and personal goals."

Femia has been a tutor and teacher for international students for six years. She has a BA from UC Berkeley and an MS in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Cal State Fullerton.

Sheila Searinghas been with ALP for 18 years and is currently teaching Developmental Composition. She has a BA in Foreign Languages and an MS in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). "We have good teachers at ALP," she says, "and we teach everything that students will need to know to enter an American university. We also offer activities for students outside of class to learn about our culture and have fun. Come to the ALP, and you will be glad that you did."

Heather Snavely joined ALP in 2005. She currently teaches Advanced Composition, Fundamental Reading and Proficient Oral Language. "I like to help students succeed in reaching their goals," Heather says, "whether they want to attend undergraduate or graduate school, get a better job, or improve their English and learn about American culture."

Heather is also the Short-Term Program Coordinator and assists with the summer program that is held each year at CSUF for Brazilian students. She has traveled in Western Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. She also studied in Egypt during college, and later taught English in China and Vietnam.

Doreen Wesolosky, who has been with ALP for 20 years, has taught English in Korea, Vietnam, China and Italy. She has also worked in Japan and Austria. Doreen teaches Novice Reading, Fundamental Composition, and Skills for the Paper-Based TOEFL. She earned a BA in Social Science and an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

"ALP students are the best and the brightest," Lorrie Winter says. "They are dedicated to success, and have a tremendous work ethic. Teaching them is an absolute joy. I think the thing I enjoy most is the great diversity among our students. They bring the world to me."

Lorrie speaks Spanish and Portuguese. Her undergraduate degree was in Theater and Cinematic Arts. She also earned an MS in Education, with a TESOL emphasis, at CSUF. She has been an ALP teacher since 2001 and says "teaching is my first love." Currently, she teaches pre-MBA classes.

"My colleagues at ALP are English language experts who spend many hours creating language-learning opportunities for our students," she notes. "I am honored to work with them."

Lorrie has travelled extensively to Brazil and hopes to teach there someday. She has also traveled to Argentina, Colombia, France and England, and looks forward to visiting Thailand, where she has family.

May Youn joined ALP in 2010 to teach Intermediate Grammar. "I came to the U.S. from Korea when I was four years old, and I witnessed some of the challenges my parents had to face living in a new country," May says. "This caused me to develop a sense of compassion for English learners. I love being able to learn from ALP students and being able to help them gain confidence in English, being a part of their English journey. I try to make their journey as enjoyable and challenging as possible."

May, who speaks Korean, is a world traveler. She has also studied French, Spanish and ancient Greek. Her travels have taken her to France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, Morocco, the Philippines, Thailand, China, and Panama. She has a BA in Linguistics from UCLA and an MA in Applied Linguistics, with a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate from Biola University.

Anoush Mazmanian has a passion for international education. "I have gone through two cultural transitions in my life," Anoush says. "And I can be a good guide to the challenges international students may encounter while studying at ALP."

Anoush was born in Armenia and moved to Athens, Greece with her family when she was 8 years old. In 2001, she moved to Los Angeles where she attended high school and later earned a BA and an MA in Linguistics. She speaks, reads and writes fluently in Armenian and Modern Greek, and minored in Spanish.

"I tried many different industries through internships while studying in college. And I realized that international education is what I have a passion for," Anoush says. "I feel lucky to have been exposed to it early on, and to have found a job where I can find growth through assisting students."

"I feel lucky to be exposed to different countries every day without leaving my desk. Every day is a learning experience," says Janeth Guerrero, the front desk coordinator for ALP. She is a graduate of CSUF, with a B.A. in Communicative Disorders, and a minor in Child and Adolescent Development. Janeth, who is fluent in Spanish, is also attending a speech and language pathology assistant program at Cerritos College. She plans to pursue a master's degree with an emphasis on bilingual speech and language pathology.

"Working with international students, experienced faculty and staff at ALP will help me reach my goals of learning about culture and bilingualism," Janeth says.

Gina Iannelli who is ALP's Administrative Service Manager, assists students and staff while also promoting Student Life activities. She also is responsible for operational duties related to faculty, payroll, billing, and travel.

Gina, who joined ALP in 2008, majored in Creative Writing and English and is currently learning Italian. "I used to visit family in Italy every summer," Gina says.

"At ALP, I enjoy learning about international students' culture and customs, as well as all the different types of foods, especially the delicacies of certain countries."

"I'm really fascinated by the students here at ALP," says Administrative Assistant Stephanie Glenn. "I enjoy interacting with them and seeing their language growth. Their drive has been inspiring to me and now I want to travel the world more than ever. Perhaps I can study language or geography in Portugal or Italy!"

Prior to arriving in ALP, Stephanie worked in UEE Student Services where she assisted with registration and other services. In ALP, she performs a variety of clerical functions such as data entry and maintaining student files.

Denay Ponce joined ALP in 2000 as a Student Assistant. Today, she is Assistant Director, Student Life. "I am responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing activities that help our students practice their English skills outside of the classroom, while also increasing their knowledge of American culture."

Denay says. "I have been fortunate enough to travel abroad to recruit ALP students. This has been great because I get to actually see some of the countries our students come from." Denay earned a BA in Criminal Justice from Cal State Fullerton.

Yuki Ueda who was born in Japan, knows first-hand what it's like to be an international student. "I know how hard it is to live in another country," says Yuki, who joined ALP in 2005.

"I love to help students, especially when they are trying to decide their goals." Currently, he assists in promoting ALP and recruiting students. He also supports student life activities and planning. Yuki holds a BA in Business and Marketing.
