- If a student withdraws on or after the first day or within 25% of a session, 65% of the session tuition will be refunded.
- After two weeks for any entry period, no refund will be given for withdrawal.
- The following fees are non-refundable: ALP and CSUF application fees, Health Center fee, and Non-Curricular fee.
*The ALP refund policy is subject to change without notice.
Explanation of Costs
The tuition and fees are set costs that are charged each term. Health insurance is required. The cost depends on your age. For more information see the insurance page.
Housing can cost from $600 - $1350 per month per person – the housing numbers provided here are estimated. You can save money by sharing an apartment with another student. Jessica Hammond in the International Student Services office will be happy to answer your questions and help you find housing. For more housing information see the housing page.
Transportation costs should also be considered. There are many apartments within walking distance of the university but occasionally, you'll need to take public transportation. Public transportation (bus) is free to international students when they use the university ID card (issued after registration).
TOEFL & IELTS Preparation
We are here to help you improve your English skills and your TOEFL score. Even if you haven't taken the test, we can assist you and help you succeed.
In order to be successful in university classes, you must be able to understand a lot of written and spoken information and be able to express your ideas clearly and correctly in writing and in speech. In addition, successful college and university students need good research skills, study skills and test-taking skills. The ALP prepares students for all of these things.
The ALP offers preparation classes for the pbt and iBT as well as the IELTS. Students may take the pbt and iBT exams on campus. Since admission to CSUF at the undergraduate level requires the iBT or the pbt TOEFL, the ALP administers the pbt five (5) times a year (two times each semester and once in the summer). The preparation classes focus on test-taking strategies, exam structure, grammar, writing, listening, reading and speaking.
Sample Schedule

Courses, Levels & Electives
Students take a placement test when they arrive. Then, they are placed in the appropriate level.
Students take classes in composition, grammar, reading and oral language. Upper level students may choose elective classes including: American Pronunciation, TOEFL, iBT and pbt Preparation, IELTS, Critical Thinking, Oral Language, Public Speaking, Seminar on Human Behavior, Business Correspondence, Business Case Analysis, English Through Sports and more.
Orientation and Advising
During the first week students attend a Meet and Greet breakfast where they meet the teachers and staff and get to know each other. Then, they take a placement test to determine what their level will be. They have a tour of the campus, learn about American classroom culture, being safe, what to do in an emergency, how to get a driver's license and maintain visa status. Orientation days end with a big welcome lunch before classes begin. Based on student scores, teachers will discuss which university classes may be taken if appropriate.
