The American Language Program offers classes to help speakers of English as a second language improve their oral and written communication skills. These classes are designed to help non-native speakers of English improve their potential for long-term career success. Instructors who are specialists in teaching English as a second language will provide participants with extensive practice, explanation and guided exercises. Classes are limited to 18 participants to maximize opportunities for individual attention. 

These classes are available for non-native speakers of English who already have a TOEFL score of 475 or an equivalent level of academic English, and want to improve their test-taking, speaking, or business communication skills.  This is a Cal State Fullerton A.S.C. program.

Bullet Advanced Grammar
Prerequisite: none. Suitable for advanced to collegiate English proficiency. Students will focus on grammar "trouble spots" to acquire advanced grammatical constructs necessary for university and professional success. Students need to have previously demonstrated a control of common English grammatical structures.

BulletAdvanced Vocabulary
Prerequisite: none. Focus on acquiring and correctly using vocabulary found in university-level contexts. Acquisition techniques will be useful in future university work, as well as personal and professional environments. Suitable for students with advanced to collegiate-level English proficiency.

BulletTOEFL iBT
Prerequisite: none. Preparation for the TOEFL examination features a review of the test-taking strategies, exam structure, writing, speaking, listening and reading skills necessary for obtaining a higher score on the internet-based examination.

BulletDevelopmental Skills for the PBT
Prerequisite: none. Using skills previously acquired, students will further develop strategies and tactics for taking the paper-based TOEFL, including exam structure, grammar, timed readings, timed listening, and other skills necessary for obtaining a higher score on the paper-based examination.

BulletAdvanced GMAT Preparation
Prerequisite: none. Suitable for collegiate English proficiency. Preparation for the Graduate Management Admission Test, in the Verbal and Analytical Writing Assessment sections. A review of advanced English language skills and test-taking strategies will provide students with useful practice and practical feedback. The Math section will not be covered.

BulletForms of Business English and Writing
Prerequisite: none. Students will focus on basic business communication forms including email, memos, letters, direct messages, indirect messages and persuasive messages. Business vocabulary will also be emphasized. Advanced to collegiate English proficiency is necessary for success in this class.

BulletReports and Proposals: Business English and Writing
Prerequisite: none. Basic instruction in reports and proposals, including RFPs and White Paper Reports, as well as employment documents such as resume, cover letters and requests for letters of recommendation. Advanced business vocabulary is requisite. Advanced to collegiate proficiency in English is required for success in this course.

BulletAmerican Pronunciation
Prerequisite: none. Designed to support students in their efforts to improve their pronunciation of American English. Segmental, suprasegmentals, intonation and speech patterns will be analyzed to provide guidance on needed improvements.
